Comer Construction Celebrates 40 Years

Comer Construction

Forest Hill, MD. Comer Construction is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its founding. Originally started in 1982 by J. Marvin Comer, the business was purchased by his daughters in 1998. Now headed by Susie Comer and Leona Comer-Hill, Comer Construction is a leading women-owned site development contractor serving the Mid-Atlantic region.

As part of the celebration, Comer Construction is sharing historical photos and reminiscing about the evolution in construction equipment and safety over the past 40 years. “It’s crazy to think of how far the industry has evolved. What used to be normal would never be allowed on a job site today,” said Susie Comer, President and CEO.

The company has supported many development projects through the years. Historically there were a lot of big land clearing and earth moving jobs. Now that the area is more developed, Comer Construction works on mostly redevelopment projects. The core business, underground utilities and site construction, hasn’t changed in 40 years.

Major projects included supporting the construction of the new international terminal at BWI in 1997 and a complete site development package for the Ripken Stadium, hotel, and fields in 2002. Recent projects include site preparation for the new Kaiser Permanente building in Timonium, grading and utility updates at Highlandtown Elementary and Middle School, water main installation on North Avenue in Bel Air, as well as, grading and utility work for the GBMC Promise Project.

The organization is planning a private 40th anniversary party for employees, customers, and local leaders on June 10, 2022. The celebration includes a ribbon cutting for a new office. A fire destroyed the old main office in March 2021 and construction is nearing completion of the new space.
