Broughton Construction Company, LLC., is a design build, construction management, and general contracting firm, recognized for its educational, municipal, and commercial facilities construction. Since 2006 under the leadership of Casey Broughton Stringer, the company benefits from 30 years of proven, innovative construction experience and has secured its place in the industry as a thriving corporation with a staff of seasoned professionals.

“The DMV is blessed to domicile Broughton Construction as its own, because of the many successful projects they have completed since 2006. Honesty, intelligence, a smart and experienced staff, fast track, great listeners, well capitalized, are some of the adjectives that best describe Broughton Construction. Please make it a prerequisite to include Broughton Construction in all of one's future design build projects,” said Wayne R.  Frazier, Sr. President of MWMCA.

1. Please tell us about Broughton Construction Company?

Broughton Construction Company is a General Construction, Construction Management and Design Build firm based in Washington DC, serving

Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia. As a leading minority owned firm, the company has built a reputation for executing fast-tracked, award-winning projects

in educational, commercial , institutional, and multi-family residential market segments.

2. What’s your experience in construction before founding Broughton?

Just before the founding of Broughton Construction in 2006, I worked with Hess Construction, our first mentor, as the Community Development Director to assist in minority business participation as well as business development. Prior to that time, I gained valuable experience as a drywall subcontractor and then a General Contractor participating in the SBA 8(a) program . It’s now been over 30 years working in the construction industry.

 3. Tell us about the various projects that you pursue?

As a Design Build , General Construction and Construction Management firm, our projects are diverse.  Our core business is the educational market ,  K-12 and Higher Ed in DC, MD , and VA for both public and private schools. Our portfolio also includes, Public Parks and Playgrounds, Commercial spaces, Institutional projects and Multi family residential . We have recently diversified into large development projects which include residential , retail ,  hotel and institutional construction.

 4. What is the market area that you will travel to for new projects?

Our market region is DC, Maryland, and Virginia but we have extended our services with projects as far south as Atlanta , as far North as Pennsylvania and as far west as Michigan.

5. What’s your take on teaming with larger primes or general contractors to win work and have you done that before, if so, with whom?

We are glad that finally the larger GCs are open to partnering with smaller firms in a real way to really help grow their capacity.

Teaming can absolutely be beneficial to both the Prime , as the minority partner is an added resource on the project for execution,  and the Minority Partner, who can gain experience and generate substantial revenue.

We’ve done teaming agreements with Hess Construction , a Mentor firm,  many years ago and have recently partnered with Gilbane to pursue opportunities.  We do look forward to working with other firms as we believe we would be great partners.

6. The DMV is blessed with lots of minority building trade contractors, but few acclaimed general contractors like you, in your opinion, what do you think is the reason for that?

I think first and foremost, you must execute.   Early on we took the risk of taking on fast tracked school projects and gained a reputation with our clients for completing the work on time.

We also have been very lucky to find mentors who want to work with us. Our success is also attributed to our team. We’ve been fortunate to have good people working with us.

 7. Please recite all the minority certifications that you possess as well as any work that you may self-perform.

We are CBE, MBE, DBE , WMATA, Baltimore City , Prince Georges County, MD/DC MSDC

 8. How do you handle daily stress created by the work you do?

I try to create a balance between work and leisure. My ultimate stress relief is a vacation somewhere with a beach and good food but routinely , I exercise on my road bike and play golf.
