MWMCA Interviews Patrick Mahoney from L.F. Mahoney

Safety and trade expertise are the most important factors in our decision making.
Patrick Mahoney, Vice President, L.F. Mahoney & Wayne R. Frazier, Sr., President, MWMCA

The Greater Baltimore region is blessed to have so many polished and specialized trades to call on for vertical and horizontal construction. One such family-owned business is LF Mahoney, a sixty-year-old business that specializes in asphalt paving and concrete projects.

“LF Mahoney, is the salt -of-earth type family-owned business that cares about its customers, employees, and the trade subcontractors they work with. As one travels around the region their equipment can be spotted busy at work paving or repairing our streets, sidewalks, and parking lots with pride and distinction. It's so refreshing, that they practice social economic engineering inclusion and are proud of it. Thank you and the long-time ownership for caring about social, governance and the environment, because we all benefit from those practices.” said Wayne R. Frazier, Sr.

Please tell us about LF Mahoney, how you started and where are you going?

The company was founded in 1963 by Leonard Francis (L.F.) Mahoney who worked for over a decade in the construction industry before going out on his own. The company began with small residential and commercial asphalt paving jobs before gradually taking on larger municipal projects in Baltimore City as both a prime and sub-contractor. Today we have expanded our customer base to include general contractors, property owners, and underground utility contractors across the state of Maryland.

Because of our commitment to providing the highest quality product to our customers, we have always taken a measured approach to growth.  Over the decades, we’ve found that growth can only be sustained when we hire and promote employees that best fit our culture and stay with us for a long time. We continue to be a family-owned and operated business and will keep these values moving forward.

What products and or services are provided?

We focus primarily on asphalt paving and concrete projects. In terms of asphalt, we provide milling and overlay, resurfacing, utility restoration and patching, and new road and parking lot construction. We also perform concrete paving of roads, sidewalks, alleys and curb and gutter installations. A smaller part of our business is rental of steel road/trench plates to underground utility companies, as well of some of our larger equipment to other contractors. We also have the capabilities to perform underground utility work such as water, sewer and storm drain installation as well as installation of gas mains and services.

What is your geographic market area?

We have a long history of being located in Baltimore City but primarily perform work in all of the surrounding counties (Baltimore, Harford, Anne Arundel, Howard). Throughout our history, we have worked across most of the state of Maryland.

How can you fit in under President Biden’s Infrastructure spending plans?

This is clearly an exciting bill for the industry at large and should trickle down to contractors of all sizes. But we remain focused on what we do best, which is to try and take on projects where we have expertise, while bringing a relentless commitment to quality and safety. We will participate as a Prime contractor bidding projects that fit our company while also looking to work as a subcontractor on larger projects.

Besides government work, what other type owners could hire your company for work?

We also do privately funded projects for real estate developers and property managers doing parking lot construction / repairs as well as new road construction for community developments.

How important is subcontractor’s safety rating when considering working with them on a project? Do you require proof of their record prior to getting into contract with them? What other features do you look for when considering work with a subcontractor?

Subcontracting is a vital part to the construction business. We often take on the role of subcontractor ourselves, and so understand both sides of the relationship. Safety and trade expertise are the most important factors in our decision making. When considering a subcontractor, we interview them concerning their safety management practices and solicit references when possible. We require an up to date insurance certificate, proof of record, an in-place and written safety program

We are always looking to partner with MBE and WBE companies of all sizes in areas such as trucking, flagging, asphalt and concrete material / service providers. We have doubled our MBE and WBE subcontracting base over the last five years.

Please reach out to Patrick Mahoney if one is interested in working with LF Mahoney!
